A Stinky Situation

I heard a terrific story from a friend that I wanted to share. As a child, my friend hated tomato soup. So one day, when she saw empty cans of tomato sauce sprawled along her mother’s kitchen counter, she prepared herself for the worst. She ran upstairs in search of her mother, only to find her pouring the tomato sauce into the bathtub. Her neighbor arrived soon thereafter. “Quick, get him in the tub!” her mother said to the lady, whose son stood nearby.

She caught one whiff of the toddler and immediately knew that he must have had a dreadful encounter with a skunk. Her bathroom reeked, but as soon as he got into the tub, the smell dissipated. “See,” her mother smiled, “tomato soup to the rescue.”

I’ll always remember that stinky situation. It taught me how powerful tomatoes are. Whenever I have a recipe that calls for onion, garlic, and tomatoes, I always cut the tomatoes last. It’s one of my best kept secrets. Tomatoes—great for cleansing your hands from the smell of onion, garlic and, heaven forbid…skunk.
